Captive Caboose - Winston-Salem Southbound 671 |
WSSB 671 is actually an ACL M-5 class steel caboose and was built by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1964. Instead of purchasing new cabooses, the ACL shops in Waycross, Georgia constructed them from old 36' boxcars, reusing the sides and roofs. They became nicknamed “orange crates” for the color ACL chose to paint them. WSSB 671 is reported to have never been an actual WSSB car nor is the number authentic however the actual ACL number of this car is unknown to me. It is currently part of the collection at the North Carolina Museum of Transportation in Spencer, NC. Images were taken on October 11, 2006. |
