WP 480 was the last car in a group of a 15 cars built by International Car Company in 1973 and 1974. These were the first steel cabooses on the Western Pacific delivered without roofwalks or end ladders and they were painted an overall bright red paint scheme. When the WP was merged into the UP in 1982, all of these cars were re-classified by the UP. The nine remaining 1973 cars (467 to 475 - the 466 which wrecked in September of 1981 and scrapped ) became CA-16 class cars and the 5 1974 cars (476 to 480) became CA-17 class cars. Only one, the 478, was painted UP armour yellow.

Western Pacific 480 was retired by Union Pacific in 1986 and was thought to have been scrapped. It is located on private property and used as a residence in the remote and heavily wooded area of North Fork, California north of Clovis, CA. The last information I have on it shows the owner as a Mr. R. Russell. The location is 54305 Pinchot Drive, North Fork, CA 93643. Images taken on April 15, 2007
