Captive Caboose - Western Pacific 428 |
WP 428 was part of a 35 car order built by International Car Company in 1955 and 1956. These were the first steel cabooses on the Western Pacific. While most of these cars were updated and modified over the years, the 428 remained nearly original when it was retired by Union Pacific in 1984 and generously donated to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA. Although the UP painted the 428 in a mineral brown/white lettering scheme right before donating the car, it has since been restored to a near representation of the as-delivered boxcar red with yellow lettering and safety appliance scheme by the museum. The first image was taken in July of 1991. The next image was taken on April 24, 2005. The final two images were taken on June 8, 2002. |
