SCL 0613 is a M-5 class steel caboose and was built by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1964. Instead of purchasing new cabooses, the ACL shops in Waycross, Georgia constructed them from old 36' boxcars, reusing the sides and roofs. They became nicknamed “orange crates” for the color ACL chose to paint them. The 0613 was donated to the State of North Carolina by CSX Corporation in 1993 and has been restored to SCL 1970s orange and black paint. It is currently part of the collection at the North Carolina Museum of Transportation in Spencer, NC. Images were taken on October 11, 2006.
